The officer said she asked Stumpf what time she had finished her job and she said at 10:30 p.m. When the officer asked Stumpf if she knew what time it was, she answered about 10:30 p.m.

Police Believe Purse Snatching Suspect Is In Custody

Madison police detectives believe a 33-year-old Mount Horeb man is responsible for a recent series of purse snatchings at Madison-area grocery stores.

The man was taken into custody for a parole violation on Feb. 1. Since that time, investigators have tied him to seven crimes, police said, but no charges have been filed yet.

Police said that the man committed the crimes to cover the costs of a drug habit that included crack cocaine and heroin use.

The stores where the crimes took place were the HyVee on East Washington Avenue, and the east and west Madison Woodman's locations.

Police said a 25-year-old woman is believed to have been with the man during some of the crimes. She could also face criminal charges, police said.

Fireplace Fire Draws Crews To Far East Madison Home

Fireplace Fire Draws Crews To Far East Madison Home

A broken pipe is to blame for a 5 foot flame shooting out of a wall of a Madison Far East home on Wednesday morning, according to the Madison Fire Department.

Fire officials said that when firefighters entered the home, they found no smoke or smell of anything burning, but when they entered the lower level recreation room of the home they found the flame directly above the fireplace.

Crews were able to shut off the valve to the fireplace, which turned off the flame, fire officials said.

When the screen and fireplace had cooled, investigators found the broken pipe. MG&E was also called to the scene and said that the break was likely caused by age or neglect.

The MG&E worker capped the end of the natural gas pipe to the burner of the fireplace.
