The class used the stone soup project to learn about the Native Americans sharing their food with the Pilgrims and also connected the project to learn about others who made difficult journeys, such as the Hmong travels from Laos and Thailand to the United States.

Police: Fight Broke Out Between Rival Gangs

Madison police said a man has been arrested in connection with a stabbing during a fight that broke out in the East Towne Mall parking lot.

Police said Marcos A. Gamez, 18, of Madison, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of attempted first-degree intentional homicide. Police said he turned himself in after learning he was wanted in the case.

Police said the preliminary investigation indicates that Gamez, who is gang-affiliated, helped start a fight just before midnight Saturday in the parking lot outside Buffalo Wild Wings with members of a rival gang by mouthing off to the other group.

The original physical fight was between two of Gamez's friends and two men from the other group, police said.

Police said the 24-year old victim, who is also gang-affiliated, was with the other gang members and tried to break up the fight. When he did so, he was stabbed by Gamez, police said.

Madison Police Investigate Home Burglaries With Vehicles Stolen

The Madison Police Department said it is currently investigating several home burglaries in which money, credit cards, and electronics are being stolen, and the criminal or criminals are driving away in the victims' vehicles.

Police said there have been four similar cases in the past week.

On the morning of Nov. 19, a 27-year old Spruce Street resident contacted police after someone entered his home overnight while he and two others slept. The victim said he got up at 4:30 a.m. to find an outside rear door wide open. Later he discovered his wallet, car keys and Honda Civic gone.

Police said the burglar apparently entered the home through an unlocked kitchen window. The victim's car was recovered early Tuesday morning after a Town of Madison police sergeant found it in a Capitol View Terrace parking lot.

Unattended Campfire Draws Firefighters To Far East Neighborhood

Madison firefighters were called to a fire near a small ravine on the city's Far East Side on Saturday.

Officials said the call came in about 3 p.m. of an unattended fire near the 4500 block of Anniversary Lane. The nearby homeowner that called said they noticed the fire from a distance, but did not know who set it.

Crews were able to contain the fire to the area and extinguish it. They said they found what appeared to be an unattended campfire.

Burglary Suspect Caught After High-Speed Chase

Law enforcement officials from three different agencies were needed to track down a person accused of stealing a car from a west side neighborhood.

The incident started just before midnight Monday in the 900 block of Drake Street, near the Henry Vilas Zoo.

Police received a call from a resident, saying their car was stolen out of their driveway. Within 20 minutes, the Town of Madison Police Department located the vehicle near the Beltline, according to police.

Eventually, this car was stopped on Dean Ave on the city's Far East Side. The driver, Telvin Johnson, jumped out of the car and ran away.

An extensive dragnet through the neighborhood was set up by Madison Police, the Town of Madison and Dane County Sheriff’s Office. With the assistance of the Madison Police K-9 Gilden, officers were able to take Johnson into custody without a fight. Police said he was found hiding in a residential back yard.
