Verona finds itself a game behind Sun Prairie in the tight Big Eight Conference race.

The Wildcats continues to rebound from their loss to Middleton, knocking off Madison West 55-10 on Friday, which also happened to be homecoming and parents night at Curtis Jones Field in Verona.

Middleton beat Madison LaFollette 42-14 to remain one back of Sun Prairie, who knocked off Madison East 48-22. Sun Prairie and Verona face off at the end of the regular season, and they were responsible for handing the Middleton's its only loss on the year.

Friends: Crash Suspect Received PTSD Treatment

 

While we're learning more about the man behind the wheel in a triple fatality early Thursday morning, the mother of one of the victims is speaking out.

Marcus Johnson was one of three University of Minnesota students killed early Thursday morning along the Interstate near Madison. His mother, Franchon Johnson, says Marcus' young life was taken way too soon.

"It's hard to say that he didn't suffer," his mother said. "It happened in ten seconds from a drunk driver."

Police said Johnson, 20, of Milwaukee, along with Elysia Rapp, 20, of Racine, and Wilfredo Ugarte, 23, of Puerto Rico were all killed when Bradley Erickson, 31, hit the back of their vehicle. The group was pulled off to the side of the Interstate as they were changing a flat tire.

Johnson's family said they're angry about Erickson's actions.

"Regardless of what it is -- murder is murder," Marcus' uncle, Elder Ron Games said.

University of Wisconsin-Madison Assistant Athletic Director for External Relations Justin Doherty said Badgers cheerleaders will honor the victims of the Thursday's interstate crash by wearing a gold ribbon during Saturday's homecoming game at Camp Randall.

Authorities Identify Victims In Fatal Interstate Crash

Authorities have identified the three people killed in crash with a man suspected of drunken driving on Interstate 39/90 near Madison on Thursday.

The victims were identified as Marcus S. Johnson, 19, of Milwaukee, Elysia M. Rapp, 20, of Racine, and Wilfredo Ugarte, 23, of Puerto Rico. Two of the victims were identified as University of Minnesota students.

The Dane County Coroner's Office said that autopsies on all three victims were completed Thursday and that preliminary results indicate all three died as a direct result of injuries sustained in the crash.

The crash happened at about 2:30 a.m. in the Town of Burke when the driver, Bradley R. Erickson, 31, of Madison, rear-ended a disabled car parked on the median shoulder.

Dane County authorities said that three of the disabled car's five occupants were outside the car and two remained inside when the crash occurred.

Enrollment Up Slightly In Madison Schools

Student enrollment in the Madison Metropolitan School District for the 2010-11 school year is up 174 students to 24,796 according to the official enrollment count conducted on the third Friday in September, as required by state law.

The 174 student rise over last year’s official enrollment count of 24,622 represents an increase of seven-tenths of one percent and it included all students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. 

Enrollment in Madison Schools has been remarkably consistent, according to officials. They said this is the tenth straight year that MMSD enrollment has been between 24,000 and 25,000 students.

High Crossing Ramp To Eastbound I-39/90/94 Reopens

Access to eastbound I-39/90/94 from High Crossing Boulevard on Madison’s Far East Side is open.

The ramp had been closed since spring to facilitate interstate work over Lien Road.  

Komen Madison Hosts 3rd Annual 'Women Rock for the Cure'

Get ready to Rock, Madison!  The Madison Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure is preparing for the third annual "Women Rock for the Cure" event on Oct. 15 at restaurants and music venues around Madison.

"We are thrilled to bring this celebration to Madison for another year," said Michelle Heitzinger, executive director of the Madison Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. "The people of Madison have really embraced this event, which is a great testament to the importance of breast cancer awareness."

Several area venues will have various music groups or food and beverage specials and will donate a portion of the proceeds from the evening to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

The venues participating in Women Rock for the Cure include; Bach’s, Brink Lounge, Brocach Irish Pub, Club Tavern, Eno Vino Wine Bar & Bistro, Hemingway Lounge, Inferno, Inn on the Park, The Cardinal’s Nest in Sun Prairie, The Claddagh Irish Pub and Wando’s Bar and Grill.
