Union Cab offers new online ordering service

Union Cab offers new online ordering service

Union Cab announced earlier this month that their taxis can now be ordered online.

The real-time online ordering service can be found at http://www.unioncab.com/order.

The new service is available on smart phones and does not require the user to download an application, said a press release.  Users can view a route and fare estimate on the new website.  A taxi confirmation is sent through e-mail and a credit or debit card is needed to place the order.

"Madison ranks near the top as a tech city,” said Union Cab Information Technology Manager Brian Hill. "Being able to order a cab through the web or phone should be an option."

Union Cab of Madison is a 220 member worker cooperative providing taxi, wheelchair accessible taxi, and courier service to the greater Madison metropolitan area.

Dane County residents worry about West Nile virus

One probable case of West Nile virus has been reported in Dane County so far, reported the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.

After two deaths linked to the virus in Milwaukee County and Waukesha County, Dane County locals are wondering how the mosquito-borne West Nile could impact them.

"It's been so dry the mosquitoes haven't been out around my house or the parks," said Madison local Pat Lemire.

Experts said the mosquito season typically lasts from May to September, but the mosquito-borne virus is hitting Wisconsin later than normal because of the hot, dry summer.

Dane County Public Health collects larva from breeding sites each week from various locations, such as East Moreland Park.

Deceased pets memorialized during national celebration

The Dane County Humane Society and Memorial Pet Services will co-host “Remembering our Pets” on Saturday, Sept. 8 in honor of National Pet Memorial Day.

The event will take place at 5132 Voges Rd. in Madison from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Pets that have passed away will be remembered with the unveiling of a new pergola, brick patio and garden area at the humane society, said a Dane County Humane Society official.

“Each personalized brick in the patio has directly helped provide love and hope for the many homeless animals at Dane County Humane Society,” says Gayle Viney, DCHS Public Relations Coordinator.  “The bricks and surrounding garden area provide a lasting opportunity to honor or memorialize very special, and loved, family members, friends or animal companions that have made a special impact on all of our lives.”

A brief ceremony will be held that includes seed planting and light refreshments.

Food drive offers free document shredding

Madison residents looking to destroy their confidential documents will have their chance on Saturday at Dane County Credit Union’s shred day and food drive.

The event will take place at the Dane County Credit Union, located at 3394 E. Washington Ave. in Madison. Pellitteri’s Data Destruction will destroy and recycle the confidential documents.

Participants are asked to bring only personal, not business, papers.

Dane County Credit Union officials ask that people be as generous as possible with food donations, which will benefit area food pantries via the Community Action Coalition of South Central Wisconsin.
