Madison lifts ban on outdoor burning

Madison lifts ban on outdoor burning

The city of Madison said Monday it has lifted the ban on outdoor burning.

The burn ban was issued last week because there was a high risk of brush fires starting due to the weather conditions.

The Madison Fire Department said the recent rainfall minimizes concern for outdoor burning in the city of Madison -- however the high winds should temporarily limit burning.

Given the rainfall, the city of Madison has lifted the ban, according to Bernadette Galvez of the Madison Fire Department.

Approved outdoor fireplaces and fire pits may now be used. Prairie and/or natural lawn burns, approved by permits, may also be conducted.

More information about outdoor and open burning in Madison can be found at http://www.cityofmadison.com/fire/documents/OutdoorandOpenBurningGuide.pdf.

The city of Madison is declaring a snow emergency for Friday night and Saturday night, according to the city's website.

Crews will continue to plow and sand the main arterials, the main connector streets, streets around the hospitals and schools and Madison Metro Bus Routes throughout the rest of the day and all evening.

Madison Lakes Still Likely To Freeze Over This Season, Experts Say

Madison Lakes Still Likely To Freeze Over This Season, Experts Say

The recent temperatures along with a mild winter overall have kept area lakes from freezing over, but along Monona Bay, a few brave ice fisherman still were waiting for the day's catch.

Officials from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Center for Limnology said that lakes Mendota and Monona have always frozen over in the winter, since the late 1800s, but over the years, researchers said the lakes are frozen for shorter periods of time.

Dedicated local anglers said the mild winters aren't stopping them from enjoying their sport.

"The ice isn't really all that bad," Thomas Paine. "It's about 2.5 to 3 inches thick. It's not too terrible."

UW researchers said past seasons have seen the lakes freeze as late as early February, which is why they expect the lakes still will freeze over sometime this year.

Forecasters are predicting much colder temperatures after Thursday's predicted snowfall.

Slippery Start To Saturday On Madison Streets

Twenty-eight of the city of Madison's salting and sanding crews have been working on area roads since about 1:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Madison Streets Department superintendent Al Schumacher said that salt and salt brine is being applied to all salt routes, which are our main arterials, main connector streets, streets that Madison Metro runs on and streets around schools and hospitals.

Schumacher said that much of the city received just over 1/2 inch of snow. He said conditions were a bit slippery in the early-morning hours, but he predicted a quick improvement as temperatures warmed up to the lower to mid-30s.

The slippery start to the day was blamed on warmer temperatures of the ground that initially melted the snow when it first fell before freezing into a thin layer of ice, Schumacher said.

The city warns all drivers to use good winter driving techniques and to break early and be cautious at all times.

Light Snow To Hit Madison, Winter Weather Website To Help Notify Residents

Light Snow To Hit Madison, Winter Weather Website To Help Notify Residents

Normally, the city would not make mention of a light snowfall prediction, but officials are taking this opportunity to update residents on a few minor changes within in the city's Streets Department this upcoming winter season.

The salt routes have been updated; the plows, salters, sanders and anti-icing tanks are ready to roll; the supplies of salt, sand, salt brine and GeoMelt (beet juice) are in; the private contractors that are used to help city crews plow all 769 miles of city streets are ready to go and our operator training is continuing, officials said.

As for the changes, the city will be using an organic de-icer when temperatures fall below 15 degrees this winter that will help salt melt snow and ice when normally salt is ineffective.  This organic de-icer is a derivative of beet juice and will be blended with our salt brine when it is applied.
