The original Michael's Frozen Custard on Monroe Street will be closed when the company celebrates its 25th year of business in 2012.
As part of a trial plan, the company closed for the season on Monday, Nov. 7.
"It's our most seasonal store," said Perry McCourtney, vice president of operations. "It's our only store without a drive through. As our other stores get busier and as that store gets slower in the winter months, we decided to close it."
McCourtney said they will use the four-month hiatus to get ready for another busy spring.
"That is a very, very busy store," McCourtney said. "The first day it hits 80 degrees we have lines out to the street, so we have to be ready for business."
For now, signs have gone up closing off the parking lot, but that doesn't mean work inside will stop, McCourtney said.
"It's just routine maintenance (that needs to be done)," McCourtney said. "It's cleaning and painting and freshening up, and getting ready for our strong spring season."
Six full-time workers will transfer to other locations, with much of the seasonal help heading back to school.
"They all transferred to our stores, either on Schroeder Road or Atwood Avenue," said McCourtney.
The reopening date will depend on the weather, but there is a good chance the Monroe Street location will reopen sometime in mid-March, McCourtney said.
In the meantime, custard fans can still stop by any of the other three Michael's locations on Madison's east side, Madison's far west side and in Verona. For more information about Michael's Frozen Custard locations and menu options, go to www.ilovemichaels.com.
